Meet Our Team

Prentiss C. Smith, President and Treasurer, founded Prentiss Smith & Company, Inc. in 1982 and has been President, Treasurer and a Director since its incorporation in 1984. Mr. Smith was born in Townshend, Vermont in 1952 and graduated from Middlebury College in 1978. Mr. Smith develops the overall strategy for client accounts, and does research on individual companies. Mr. Smith passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law Exam Series 65, the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam Series 63 and the General Securities Exam Series 2.  He has served as a board member or trustee of many local organizations including the New England Youth Theatre, Brattleboro Music Center and the Social Banking Fund at Vermont National Bank (now part of People’s United Bank).

Prentiss R. Smith, Vice President and Director of Research, joined Prentiss Smith & Co. in 2002 after his graduation from Tufts University. He directs the research staff and works with his father on portfolio strategy and security selection. Mr. Smith passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law Exam Series 65.

Frederick Brubaker, CFA, Senior Investment Analyst, joined the equity research team in 2007.  Mr. Brubaker graduated from Middlebury College in 2004 with a B.A. in International Politics and Economics with a minor in Chinese.  He formerly worked as an analyst with InterChina Consulting in Shanghai, China. He is fluent in Mandarin.

Karlie Borst, Chief Compliance Officer, has been employed by Prentiss Smith and Company since 1993.  Mrs. Borst obtained her A.S. in Business from the Community College of Vermont in 1998. She is the head trader, compliance officer, and comptroller for the company.  She passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law Exam Series 65.

Laurie Barrett, Director Client Relations, leads client relations and new business development for the company, and spends time meeting with clients and reviewing the performance of their portfolios. Mrs. Barrett obtained her A.S. in Business from Champlain College in 1991. She has been employed by Prentiss Smith and Company since 2007, and formerly worked for a pension consulting firm for seven years.  She passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law Exam Series 65.

Penny J. Kaufman, Client Relations, has been employed by Prentiss Smith & Company since 1999.  Mrs. Kaufman graduated from Chelsea College, University of London, England in 1985 with a B.S. in Environmental Biology.  She handles client  service for the Brattleboro office.  She passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law Exam Series 65.

Gertrude M. Walker, Client Relations, has been employed by Prentiss Smith & Company since 1989.  Ms. Walker graduated from Bradford College in 1964 with an A.A. in History. She passed the Uniform Investment Advisor Law Exam Series 65 and the General Securities Representative Examination Series 7.
